How it works

  1. Pick how long your block is. 25 minutes for a short sprint, 45 to 90 for deep work.
  2. Put your phone away and work on one thing until the timer goes off.
  3. Then take a real break before you start another block.
  4. On your phone the focus timer runs in the background, with a notification and a quick-start widget. Open it in NanoTimer.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a pomodoro timer?
A pomodoro timer is a focus timer with a fixed rhythm: 25 minutes of work, short break, repeat. A focus timer lets you choose the length, so for a long 90-minute deep-work block it is more flexible.
How long can I focus?
It varies by person and task. Many people hold 45 to 90 minutes of deep work before quality drops. Start short, extend when it works, and stop when you notice yourself drifting.
Does sound help against distraction?
For some people, yes: the end tone gives a clear start and finish, so you are not checking the clock. If you want background sound too, the NanoTimer app has ambient sounds.
