How it works
- Start the timer and work through rounds of 5 handstand push-ups, 10 pistols (alternating), 15 pull-ups.
- Score is rounds plus reps at the twenty minute mark.
- The pistols are ten total, five per leg, alternating.
- If any of the three movements is a maximum-effort skill for you, scale it: Mary is a workout, not a skill test.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between Mary and Cindy?
- The same twenty minute AMRAP shape with the same rep scheme of 5, 10 and 15, but every movement is a step up: handstand push-ups instead of push-ups, pistols instead of air squats, pull-ups instead of nothing. Cindy tests engine, Mary tests skill under fatigue.
- How do I scale the pistols?
- Common options are a box or bench to sit to, holding a rig for balance, or a partial range. The point is ten controlled single-leg reps, not ten attempts that turn into a balance session.
- Is Mary a good first benchmark?
- Not usually. If handstand push-ups and pistols are not solid for you, the scaling changes the workout so much that the score will not compare to anything. Cindy or Helen make better first benchmarks.
