Why do I sleep through my alarm?

This is a different problem from an alarm that does not go off. Yours does go off, and you stay asleep or turn it off without remembering. Some of that is your phone's fault and some of it is not, so here is the honest split.

One chime is easy to sleep through

A real alarm keeps sounding until you deal with it. A notification plays its sound once and gives up, and most alarm apps schedule notifications. If your alarm makes a single noise and then silence, that is what is happening, and sleeping through it is the expected outcome rather than bad luck.

You turned it off in your sleep

If the phone is within arm's reach you can dismiss an alarm while barely conscious and have no memory of it. It is worth checking the Clock app: an alarm you turned off looks identical to one that never rang.

The old advice still works better than any feature. Put the phone across the room so switching it off requires standing up.

Snooze can hide the problem

Snoozing repeatedly does not give you useful sleep, and it trains you to treat the sound as something to silence rather than obey. If you snooze four times, your real wake time is the last one, so set the alarm for that and skip the fiction.

What is not the phone's fault

How deeply you sleep, how much sleep you got and how consistent your schedule is all matter more than any app, and they are the parts an alarm cannot solve. If you sleep through alarms every single day despite a reasonable bedtime, that is worth raising with a doctor rather than a new app.

We would rather say that than sell you a feature we do not have. NanoTimer makes sure the sound is allowed to play and keeps playing. It does not measure your sleep and does not claim to know when to wake you.

What actually helps

  • An alarm that keeps ringing until you stop it, rather than one notification chime.
  • One that is allowed past the silent switch and a Focus, so the phone cannot decide to mute it.
  • Ringer volume up, and Change with Buttons off so it cannot be lowered by accident.
  • The phone out of arm's reach.
  • A wake time you actually mean, instead of three snoozes.

Start with an alarm that keeps ringing

NanoTimer sets a real AlarmKit alarm (iOS 26+): through silent, through Focus, ringing until you stop it. Free, no ads, no subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Are heavy sleepers real, or is it a habit?
People genuinely differ in how easily sound wakes them, and sleep debt makes anyone harder to wake. Both are true at once, which is why the fixes split into the phone side (a real alarm, loud enough, out of reach) and the sleep side (enough of it, at consistent times).
Does a louder or more annoying tone help?
Up to a point. Nothing plays above your ringer volume, so the bigger win is usually an alarm that is allowed to sound at all and does not stop after one chime. A sharper tone beats a gentle one at the same volume.
Do puzzle alarms that make you solve maths work?
For some people, yes, because they force you far enough awake to not fall back. NanoTimer does not have them. If that is the feature you need, use an app that has it. We would rather point you there than pretend.
